Friends Off Freter: Improve Safety of the intersection at Liberty 26 and Freter Rd
The Issue
Unfortunately it is commonplace to learn of motor vehicle accidents on Liberty Rd (26) in Carroll County, Maryland. One area that is particularly scary is a blind turn off west-bound 26 onto a neighborhood street called Freter Road. We, the neighbors who live off of Freter road are requesting that the State/County intervene to make the road safer. One idea is to add blinking caution lights, increasing the size of the yield sign approaching the road and possibly adding rumble strips to increase awareness.
Since moving to the neighborhood I have learned of neighbor’s fears about making that left turn due to the high speed and lack of visibility at which westbound cars travel. I experienced my own close call last year with my twin children in the backseat where a car flew by and almost drove off the road, narrowly rear-ending is at high speed. The year before that I saw the aftermath of a car flipped over trying to avoid crashing into the back of a vehicle turning at that very same intersection on Freter Road.
In preparation for the creation of this petition I wanted an image from google maps to show the exact location, and I was shocked to see that the « street view » image on Google has evidence of the problem we describe: an extremely long set of tire skid marks on that exact lane leading up to the dangerous left turn.
WHAT IS AT STAKE?
Our lives. Our neighbors lives. Our Children and visiting relatives lives. Delivery drivers, first responders or anyone else taking a risk to turn into our neighborhood.
WHY IS NOW THE TIME TO ACT?
Earlier this week, one of our fellow neighbors was killed in an automobile crash on 26 liberty road. Not the same intersection but about .5 miles further down the road. If the MD State/ Carroll County can act now, it could potentially save a life of prevent needles accidents and injuries to individuals who live near us or are driving through….
The proposed solution is modest on scale and cost, but its benefit could pay dividends in raising awareness of road safety in our community.
Please pledge your support to the Friends Off Freter cause you upgrade caution left turn sign to include flashing lights and possible addition of rumble strips leading up to the turn. This modest action will keep our loved ones safe from needless automobile accidents and casualties.
