Board of Supervisors, Call to Action
Now is the time to ask Sacramento County’s Supervisor, Don Nottoli, to influence fellow Board members to change the County’s development plans and save Mather’s wetlands preserve!
Preserve Vital Wetland Habitats
Mather, California, provides perfect conditions for vernal or seasonal pools, extremely important wetland habitats for rare species. Thousands of children toss their electronic devices aside to embark on field trips to the pools each year to explore and learn about these precious resources.
For many years, the U.S. Air Force maintained Mather as one of its air bases, which protected Mather’s wetland preserve. Eventually, Mather was designated as a Habitat Conservation Project, designed to protect not only the vernal pools habitat, but also dozens of endangered and protected wildlife, such as birds, mammals, and amphibians.
Wetlands Rezoned for Housing and Commercial
Unfortunately, the U.S. Air Force deeded the base property to Sacramento County. Instead of maintaining the preserve, the County rezoned the property and partnered with developers. As a result, these endangered wetlands and wildlife may soon become a sad memory in the name of “economic development.” Sacramento County now proposes to fill in some of these precious wetlands with asphalt and cement to build a busy highway, roads, housing, and strip malls, which means a death sentence or even local extinction to many unique species.
Wetlands Threatened by Economic Development
Wildlife's ability to survive the threats of economic development is outpaced by events that can potentially destroy their existence forever. Although their protection is in jeopardy, we believe if enough people express their objections to economic development for the sake of government revenue, we can keep our natural heritage, preserve our shared quality of life, and foster a healthier environment for future generations.
