The women across Perth want to build, repair and master skills that have been historically assigned to men. A new wave of power tool empowerment is here — and we need your help to realise it.

There are no women's sheds in WA

While we love and whole-heartedly support the incredible Men's Shed movement, there are currently no women's sheds in Western Australia. There's no place for women and people who identify as women to learn practical skills and become more confident, independent and self-reliant.

  • Sign this petition if you support a Women's Shed in Fremantle.

We can build one — and soon.

Booyembara Park in White Gum Valley has space for community development and Fremantle Council is asking for submissions. The Women's Shed Movement WA which already has 504 members, is requesting approval for a purpose-built women's shed as part of the development. By signing this petition, you will support our submission to Fremantle Council.

This will be a space for women and people who identify as women to learn new skills. Some activities may include furniture making, metalwork, plastics, repairs, mechanics and more. It will be a place for building community, where women can teach others, learn, connect and be productive. All while fostering the skills of women and girls who want to engage in trades and male-dominated industries.

This proposal is supported by Australia-wide organisation SALT ( Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen).

Power Tool Empowerment and More.

For centuries handy work was a job assigned to the man of the house. But in a modern world where many women are living independently, coupled with the fact that women are outliving their partners, these skills are becoming increasingly useful.

Teaching women practical hands-on skills isn't just about empowering women, but also about changing social norms. More and more women are realising their potential in industries that perhaps once wouldn't have been considered. A Women's Shed can be the first step for many women on the journey to a new industry or job.

Looking to our wider community, social isolation is a growing problem in Australia for all people. Much like the men's shed movement, a women's shed is a place where participants can share their lives and the issues they are facing while building confidence and skills.

Our Goal and Next Steps
