#FreeOctopus: Say NO to intensive octopus farms in Mexico!
Various scientific evidence has shown that octopuses are highly intelligent sentient beings, which possess a complex nervous system that makes them capable of experiencing pain and suffering.
To date, there are no octopus aquaculture production systems in the world, but in Mexico it has recently been possible to replicate their entire reproductive process and life cycle in captivity, which is the first step towards the establishment of intensive production systems.
The National Autonomous University of Mexico, in its Academic Unit located in the town of Sisal in the State of Yucatan, has carried out research related to intensive octopus farming for more than 15 years. Currently, they have patented incubators that allow them to maintain the octopus eggs without the need for the presence of the female, and they intend to replicate the production system along the entire Yucatan coast.
In addition to all the suffering associated with intensive production systems with sentient and intelligent animals such as octopuses, it has been demonstrated that the mortality rate of this cephalopod in intensive farms is 52% and that around 30% is due to cannibalism among them as a consequence of their overcrowding.
We seek to prevent the installation of intensive octopus production in Mexico due to the serious animal welfare problem it implies and therefore we ask for your support: sign so that together we reject intensive octopus production!
