Freedom to Wear Pants All Year at Ōtūmoetai College

Freedom to Wear Pants All Year at Ōtūmoetai College
The Issue
As a student at Ōtūmoetai College, I know firsthand the discomfort caused by restrictive uniform rules. Struggling with body image and confidence, I believe every student deserves to feel comfortable and supported in what they wear to school. No one should feel anxious or limited because of a uniform policy.
Right now, the school is planning to enforce a rule that only allows trousers to be worn in certain seasons. This policy is unfair and impractical. New Zealand’s weather is unpredictable—it can be hot, cold, sunny, and rainy all in the same day. Restricting trousers to winter ignores this reality and fails to respect students’ personal preferences, cultural needs, and comfort levels.
The New Zealand Human Rights Commission has made it clear that schools have a duty to create inclusive uniform policies that work for all students. Uniforms should be practical, accessible, and non-discriminatory. Limiting trousers to certain months reinforces outdated stereotypes, increases stress for families who have to buy multiple uniforms, and creates barriers to students’ wellbeing.
Allowing trousers to be worn year-round is a simple, realistic solution. It would reduce unnecessary costs, improve comfort, and help create a more inclusive environment where every student can feel confident and respected.
I urge Otūmoetai College to take this progressive step and update its policy. Please sign this petition to show your support for a fairer, more inclusive uniform policy that allows trousers to be an option all year round. Together, we can make our school a place where all students feel comfortable, confident, and able to thrive.
