Free Tyesha Long
The Issue
Tyesha Long, a dear friend and valued member of our community, currently finds herself the victim of an unjust legal system that wrongfully convicted and sentenced her to 27 years after she defended herself against her abuser. Tyesha's story is heartbreakingly common, as every year, countless women are incarcerated for protecting themselves against domestic violence. Nationally, an estimated 70% to 80% of incarcerated women are survivors of domestic or sexual violence, and studies suggest up to 74% of those convicted of murder or manslaughter had experienced intimate partner violence in the year prior to the offense. Statistically, Oklahoma is #1 in the nation for women incarceration, domestic violence, and women murdered by men. Our state holds the highest rate of female incarceration and ranks among the highest nationally for domestic violence and the rate of women murdered by men. Tragically, many of these women, like Tyesha, are punished rather than protected by our justice system.
Our dear friend Tyesha is more than just a statistic. She is a resilient woman, beloved by her family and friends, and her unjust confinement continues to cause immense pain and suffering to all who know her. We believe strongly that she deserves her freedom and the chance to rebuild her life.
We call upon the justice system and those with the power to intervene and correct this grave injustice. We ask you to review Tyesha's case, consider the circumstances under which she was forced to act, and grant her the freedom she deserves. Help us bring Tyesha home where she truly belongs. Please sign this petition to stand with us in our fight for justice.
And as always, we appreciate your continued support.
