Free this book! "The Canadian Army in Afghanistan"
The Issue
I'm a veteran of Afghanistan, August of 2004 to February of 2005. I'm writing this because this is something I care about and I believe that with the support of people like you, change is possible. This is the first petition I've ever started, but I was moved to do something because I feel like our story and our experiences are being kept in the dark. I know I'm not alone.
The Canadian Army and Department of National Defence (DND) commissioned historian Dr. Sean Maloney to write a history of Canada's involvement in Afghanistan. Dr. Maloney completed a three volume work, "The Canadian Army in Afghanistan".
1600 copies were printed, 800 in English and 800 in French. While a pdf copy is available for download, there are no firm plans to make the printed book available to the general public. It is unclear why the availability is limited, but the hard truth is that most Canadian citizens, including Afghanistan veterans, will be unable to read this history.
This is unacceptable. This work was created through the use of taxpayer dollars and should be given widest possible distribution. Canadians have a right to to be able to obtain and hold copies of this story for future generations. If the Canadian government is at all serious about honesty, openness and transparency, it will direct the DND to come up with a plan to print this work. It is already 10 years overdue.
We call on the Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Bill Blair, to do the right thing and make print copies of this book available to all.
