I, the petitioner, call for an immediate end to the practice of whale captivity. Orca whales are beautiful, smart beings that are meant to explore the huge oceans, not to perform for our entertainment in small pools that are like bathtubs to these huge whales. Locking them up to make money while they live miserably is not okay. 

 

Why this matters:

Orcas in captivity suffer physically and mentally.

 According to the Whale Sanctuary Project, captive orcas often display signs of  chronic stress, like abnormal behaviors like repetitive swimming patterns, self-harm and aggression. Their lifespan in captivity is significantly shortened than in the wild, where they can live up to 90 years. In marine parks, many orcas die very young due to illness and stress-related conditions. 

 

Extreme captivity and lack of space. 

In the wild, orcas swim up to 100 miles a day, but are restricted, due to the size of their tanks. As highlighted by Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), these tanks deprive orcas of the ability to engage in natural behaviors, leading to physical and psychological harm.

 

Family separation and social isolation,

Orcas are very social animals that naturally live in big family pods. Marine parks often separate calves from their mothers causing emotional trauma WDC expresses that great separation can disrupt their social bonding, causing loads of distress on the whales.

Yet with all I’ve said there is still so much happening behind the doors of marine parks that need to be stopped.

 

 

 

 What we want to happen.

Ban Captivity and the breeding of orcas worldwide.

Yes certain marine parks have shut down the breeding process like SeaWorld, but that's just one company. There are still lots that continue to breed their captive Orcas so they don’t have to go find more out in the wild, but if they shut down their breeding programs that doesn’t mean they can just go back to capturing them from the wild.They are still open and keeping the orcas captive, which our main goal is for them to shut down and let these animals go free.

End orca shows and exploitation, we need to ban orca performances, and to end the enforcement of their unnatural behaviors. Marine parks should focus more on education of the animals they have and educate others and not exploiting them for people's entertainment. I encourage tourists and travelers to avoid marine parks that make profit from orca exploitment. 

Support the Creation of Marine Sanctuaries, They advocate for the funding of ocean-based sanctuaries, where former captive orcas can be relocated. These sanctuaries would provide larger, more natural environments with open-water access, allowing orcas to swim freely while still receiving the necessary care needed.  

Promote Education and Public Awareness. We need to increase public education campaigns on the cruelty of orca captivity, and promote awareness through schools, social media, and campaign groups. We can encourage responsible tourism by promoting whale-watching experiences in the wild, which don’t support whale captivity.

How can we improve/ stop orca captivity

Push for legal action, push for global procedure, similar to Canada’s Ending captivity of whales and dolphins act, which banned captivity of marine mammals. We need to encourage other countries to enforce stricter animal welfare laws, and hold marine parks accountable for their actions.

We can encourage companies to stop promoting and partnering with marine parks that exploit orcas for people's entertainment. As well as promoting the development and funding of virtual reality and educational marine experiences that don’t involve live animals to teach the truth about the orcas and how harmful having the living animals there is to them. We should encourage former marine parks to repurpose their facilities into rescues and rehabilitation centers for injured or stranded marine life,

I believe that this issue affects all over the world. By getting rid of orca captivity it encourages respect to the marine ecosystem and allows more conversation and less exploitation, it reduces the demand of capturing wild orcas, by helping protect vulnerable populations from being targeted. By doing this marine parks may suffer financial losses but by promoting sanctuaries and wildlife conservation, countries can attract tourists looking for educational experiences instead of cruel entertainment.
