The Issue

Five innocent infant orangutans are being held captive in India following a failed illegal wildlife trafficking attempt. Their current existence is distressingly unnatural and detrimental, both mentally and physically. These young creatures, torn away from their families and natural habitats in Indonesia, are in dire need of being returned to a sanctuary where they can receive proper rehabilitation and care they so desperately require.

Orangutans are intelligent and social beings, requiring a vast and complex environment to thrive. In the wild, they roam expansive territories and live among rich biodiversity, which supports their physical and psychological well-being. The zoo environment in India cannot substitute for their wild, natural habitat. Reports and studies have shown that captivity causes significant stress and behavioral abnormalities in orangutans, severely impacting their health and lifespan.

In light of these concerns, it's crucial to emphasize the legal ramifications of illegal wildlife trafficking. According to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), orangutans are listed as critically endangered, and any unauthorized trading or possession is a violation of international law. Keeping these infant orangutans captive in a zoo not only hinders their chance of survival and contributes to the decline of the species, but also disregards international protection agreements designed to safeguard endangered wildlife.

The compassionate solution is to facilitate their immediate transfer back to Indonesia, where wildlife experts and rehabilitation centers such as the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) are equipped with the necessary expertise to nurture and eventually reintroduce them to a life in the wild. These centers are dedicated to ensuring that each individual orangutan's physical, emotional, and social needs are met, thus offering them a genuine chance at a fulfilling life.

Their lives, much like ours, are precious. We must act in their best interests to ensure that they do not become yet another tragic statistic of human greed and negligence. I urge you to join me in advocating for their return to a sanctuary that can offer them the life they were meant to live. Our voices can amplify their plight and ensure swift action from the authorities.

Please sign this petition to demand the immediate return of these infant orangutans to a sanctuary in Indonesia. Together, let's ensure these beautiful creatures are given the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the future of their species.
