The Issue

My friend, Ruth, has been unjustly detained and arrested in Auburn, Alabama, for exercising her constitutionally protected right to free speech. This has not only shocked me, but should alarm anyone who values the principles enshrined in our 1st Amendment. Ruth's actions were peaceful and did not involve blocking any buildings or disturbing the peace. This raises a serious concern about how our constitutional rights are being interpreted and enforced in Auburn.

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution explicitly guarantees the right to free speech. In 1969, the Supreme Court ruled in "Brandenburg v. Ohio" that the government cannot punish inflammatory speech unless it is likely to incite imminent lawless action. Ruth’s actions clearly did not meet this threshold, and yet she finds herself behind bars without any charges filed—a blatant violation of her constitutional rights.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), more than 90,000 people are arrested annually in the United States for protest-related activities, even though most are subsequently released without charges. This is not just a statistic; it is an indicator of systemic issues where individual constitutional rights are trampled in favor of a misguided interpretation of law and order.

If Ruth's rights can be ignored in such a glaring manner, it sets a dangerous precedent for everyone in Auburn and across the nation. Her arrest sends a chilling message to anyone daring to voice a dissenting opinion or stand up for a cause, no matter how peacefully. We cannot allow such an erosion of our fundamental freedoms.

We are calling on Auburn city officials and law enforcement to immediately release Ruth from custody and affirm their commitment to uphold constitutional rights. Moreover, there needs to be a thorough review of the procedures that led to her arrest to prevent such injustices from occurring in the future.

Join me in demanding justice for Ruth. Sign this petition to help free Ruth, protect our constitutional rights, and ensure that freedom of speech is respected and upheld in Auburn, AL.
