A long list of corruption:

The federal court found that prosecutors had been very deceptive and actively misled the court to believe that Rickie Slaughter had been identified in a set of photo lineups — when in fact, that never really happened.

Prosecutors also lied about the actual time that the crime occurred, because Rickie Slaughter had proof that he was on the other side of town, nearly 10 miles away, picking up his girlfriend at the time of the crime. Their attempt to undermine Rickie’s alibi was part of a larger scheme to frame him for a crime he didn’t commit.

The detective on the case, Jesus Prieto, coerced witnesses and fabricated evidence to cover up the fact that Rickie had an alibi — or that someone else committed the crime. The judge found that there was no incriminating evidence linking Rickie Slaughter to this crime — no DNA, no hair, no fingerprints, no forensic evidence, and no confession.

Rickie was just 19 years old when he was falsely accused.

Why is Rickie still being held?

Because prosecutors are currently trying to find another way to frame Rickie again. Instead of taking accountability for taking Rickie’s life, they would rather try to preserve a wrongful conviction and avoid paying the huge amount of financial compensation they owe for the 22 years they stole from him.
