The Issue

Qingfang Pang is not just a talented basketball player; he is a young man with dreams and aspirations that extend far beyond the basketball court. As a Chinese national and key incoming player for Mississippi Valley State University's men's basketball team, Pang simply wanted to be a part of an MVSU collegiate program that brings hope and excitement to its community and fans across the country. His story reflects the promise of sports to unite people across cultures and borders.

Pang's journey took an unexpected turn when he was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while traveling to New York to address his VISA issues with a family friend and sponsor. This sudden detention has not only interrupted his education and basketball career but has also placed his future in jeopardy at a time when he should be focusing on his studies and athletic development. Pang has lived legally in the United States for the past 4 years at Christ is King High School in Middle Village, New York, and at Malone College in New Rochelle, New York.

Pang's attorney, Marcus Session, has made it clear that his client was not fleeing from any legal obligations, but was instead on a mission to rectify his visa situation and secure his right to continue living, studying, and thriving in the United States. Qingfang Pang's ambition to resume college life, play basketball, and pursue his dreams is a fundamental right, much like any other 21-year-old striving to carve out a life for himself.

The Mississippi Valley State University men's basketball program, revered for its role in advancing collegiate athletic prospects, stands at a crossroads with Pang's absence. His potential contributions to the team are invaluable, symbolizing not only basketball excellence but also the vibrant cultural exchange that is emblematic of American collegiate sports.

By signing this petition, you take a stand for Qingfang Pang and for the countless international students facing similar circumstances. Urge ICE to reconsider this detention and allow Qingfang to return to his studies and athletic endeavors. Let us champion the rights of all students to pursue their dreams, enrich the community, and succeed without fear of unjust detainment.

Sign the petition today and support Qingfang Pang's rightful fight for freedom and opportunity.
