The Issue

Perla Cantu, a 29-year-old woman from Dallas, Texas, has been wrongfully jailed despite overwhelming evidence proving her innocence.

At the time of the 2023 shooting, Perla Cantu was verifiably at home after completing an eight-hour workday. Her time records, surveillance video, and multiple witnesses confirm she clocked out from her job — located over 40 minutes away in a neighboring county — and went directly home without ever approaching the crime scene.

Despite this clear evidence proving she had no involvement in the tragic event, Perla was arrested nearly two years later and remains wrongfully incarcerated today.

Now eight months pregnant, Perla is not only denied her freedom — she’s being denied life-saving prenatal care. Earlier this month, she was prevented from attending a critical OBGYN appointment after jail officials falsely claimed she was “in court.”

At her next medical visit, she was informed her baby’s heartbeat was dangerously low, putting both their lives at risk.

On top of the medical neglect, Perla’s court-appointed attorney has abandoned his responsibilities:

  • No proper introduction or interview.
  • Disrespectful, unethical, and unprofessional behavior.
  • Prioritized another case while ignoring urgent issues in Perla’s defense.
  • Failed to advocate for dismissal despite overwhelming evidence of innocence.
  • This is not only a miscarriage of justice — it is a violation of Perla’s constitutional rights and a direct threat to her life and her baby’s.

We Demand:

  • Immediate release of Perla Cantu.
  • Emergency prenatal medical intervention.
  • Dismissal of the wrongful charges.
  • Investigation into jail and attorney misconduct.

Who We Are Petitioning:

  • Dallas County District Attorney’s Office
  • Dallas County Jail Administration
  • Dallas County Sheriff’s Office
  • State Bar of Texas
  • Texas Commission on Jail Standards
  • Local and State Elected Officials
  • Major Media Outlets

Why This Matters:

  • Justice delayed is justice denied — and now a life is at risk.
  • Perla and her baby deserve a chance to live, not to be sacrificed by a broken, negligent system.
