Update (August 2, 2026), per a statement from the Kurdish Lawyers' Union: Pastor Nihad entered Syria entirely legally, through an official border crossing in his own car, and faced no questioning on entry. After arriving in his village and posting photos with his family on social media, General Security forces raided the village and detained him without presenting any judicial warrant, confiscating his car (with Lebanese plates) and his mobile phone, both of which remain seized two weeks later. The formal charge against him is publishing digital content "intended to insult religions and sacred symbols and incite sectarian tension," based on three old Facebook posts and comments (submitted as screenshots), under Article 31 of Law No. 20 of 2022 on cybercrime (a law originally issued by Bashar al-Assad himself before his regime fell), carrying a penalty of one to three years in prison plus a fine of 3–6 million Syrian pounds. Notably, the identity of the complainant remains unknown to this day, and he was never questioned during previous visits to Damascus, Aleppo, and Afrin even though the same posts were already public, raising serious questions about the real motive and timing behind the case. The file was transferred from the investigating judge in Afrin to the cybercrime investigating judge in Aleppo. His interrogation hearing, originally scheduled for August 2, was postponed to Monday, August 3, 2026. The Kurdish Lawyers' Union is calling for his immediate release, the return of his confiscated belongings, a fair trial before an independent judiciary, and respect for freedom of opinion, expression, religion, and belief.
