On July 19, 2026, Pastor Nihad Hassan, leader of the Kurdish Evangelical Church in Beirut, was arrested for no crime other than peacefully expressing his views on social media. He is currently held in Afrin Central Civil Prison, and his case has been referred to judicial authorities in Aleppo, pending a court appearance.

Why this matters

Pastor Nihad is a man of peace, faith, and service. He is from the village of Kurdan, in the Jindires sub-district of the Afrin region in Syria, and embraced the Christian faith in 2008. Since then, he has dedicated his life to providing spiritual care and humanitarian aid to communities in need in Lebanon, Syria, and several other countries.

This case is not about one faith or community alone  it concerns everyone who believes in freedom of opinion, freedom of expression, and the right of every person to a fair, transparent trial. Human rights organizations and religious advocates have warned that detaining a religious leader over his personal views raises serious concerns about the state of religious freedom and freedom of expression in Syria, especially given that no detailed official statement has yet been issued regarding the specific charges or evidence behind his arrest.

We call on the authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Pastor Nihad Hassan, and to guarantee him a fair and transparent trial should legal proceedings continue.

لماذا يهم هذا الأمر؟

القس نهاد رجل سلام وإيمان وخدمة. وهو من أبناء قرية كوردان التابعة لناحية جنديرس في منطقة عفرين بسوريا، وقد اعتنق الإيمان المسيحي عام 2008. ومنذ ذلك الحين، كرّس حياته لتقديم الرعاية الروحية والمساعدات الإنسانية للمجتمعات المحتاجة في لبنان وسوريا والعديد من الدول الأخرى.

هذه القضية لا تخصّ طائفة أو دينًا بعينه، بل تخصّ كل من يؤمن بحرية الرأي والتعبير وحق كل إنسان في محاكمة عادلة وشفافة. فقد حذّرت منظمات حقوقية وفعاليات دينية من أن توقيف رجل دين بسبب آرائه يثير مخاوف جدية بشأن واقع حرية الدين والمعتقد وحرية التعبير في سوريا، في ظل غياب أي إعلان رسمي مفصّل حتى الآن حول التهم الموجهة إليه أو الأدلة التي استندت إليها إجراءات توقيفه.

إننا ندعو السلطات إلى الإفراج الفوري وغير المشروط عن القس نهاد حسن، وضمان محاكمة عادلة وشفافة له إذا استمرت الإجراءات القضائية.
