China is accused of locking up hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs without trial and placing them into re-education camps in Xinijang.
I’m Gulhumar, a 26 year old living in France. My mother is one of many innocent people trapped inside these camps. Please help me bring her home by signing my petition.
In November 2016, my mother in France received a phone call from her former boss in China asking her to return to sign documents to receive her pension. After hesitating, she booked a return ticket from France (where we live) to China. When she arrived to the office, a policeman was waiting for her. She was immediately taken into custody and her passport was confiscated. My mother was extremely frightened because she didn’t do anything wrong! For two months she was not allowed to leave the region.
On 29 January 2017, my mother was officially arrested and disappeared. We heard no news until July when China confirmed that my mother had been detained in a “re-education” camp in June. We weren’t given any more information about her.
Knowing the persecution of Uyghurs like us in China, we believe she was subjected interrogations in a prison - or worse - torture. When she first entered the camp, she was allowed a single phone call. The only thing she was allowed to ask for was clean underwear and her personal belongings.
Today, she is still in a camp. She’s only allowed one visit a month, with her mother. She is scared to talk. My father, my sister and I, who live in France, are not allowed to contact her. We have to believe what my grandmother tells us on the phone. Last May Grandma begged us in tears not to call anymore because the the police had “harassed her the whole day”. She did not understand what she had done to deserve such treatment.
This isn’t just happening to me. It’s happening to many other families too. Countless lives are being destroyed.
I have never spoken out publicly about what’s happening in my home region. Maybe out of fear of putting our story out there but mostly because I fear the repercussions my mother may face because of it. But I cannot stay silent anymore. The camps opened in 2016 and it’s estimated that 3 million have been sent to them.
