Free Media for a Fair Malaysia

Why is media freedom important?

Free and fair information (e.g. via mainstream media) is crucial for clear and transparent democracy to prevail.

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression. This right, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, includes:

freedom to hold opinions without interference,       and

impart information and ideas through any media

regardless of frontiers.

What is the issue today?

Press freedom in Malaysia has dropped to a ranking of 145 out of 179 countries in the World Press Freedom Index. The slide is bad news not just for the media but for Malaysians as it means that the media's ability to bring news that's accurate, timely and fair has been compromised. (Malay Mail 31 Jan 2013)

What do people in the media say?

May 3 is UN's World Press Freedom Day.

“…access to information is a crucial part of an enabling environment in which the public and civil society organisations can participate in decision-making, and the media can report in the public interest and scrutinise wrongdoing and corruption in the public sector. It is, as a result, a key part of a sound development program, as well as being a human right.”

What do we in Malaysia want?

Exercising our freedom to think independently is part of being human and part of being a citizen in a democratic society. We have the freedom to decide what we consume and how we consume it. We have the intellect to decide for ourselves, based on the evidence before us, on what our views and actions would be.

We thus ask, based on the above, that the Malaysian Government:

1. Promote space for free information and free press - that allow balanced coverage of information, and transparency of issues that are of public interest (e.g. the general elections)

2. Remove restrictions on the media, particularly mainstream media, and allow them to report all-sides of a story / issue fairly without bias, and without negative repercussions to the media

Together we can promote a free media for a fair Malaysia.
