I honestly don't know where to begin this update.

Over the last eighteen months there have been moments where I've thought things couldn't get any worse, only to receive another phone call that proves me wrong.

This week was one of those moments.

We have received deeply concerning reports that Craig has been given a further two years in prison. From what we have been told, he believed he was being taken to see his lawyer, but was instead brought before a judge and informed of an additional sentence. We understand he was given no lawyer, no translator and no opportunity to defend himself.

To hear that whilst both Mum and Craig continue their hunger strike was heartbreaking.

As a family, the first feeling was complete shock. Then came the worry. They're already incredibly weak, and all we can think about is what this latest development is doing to Craig, and to Mum, knowing she is powerless to help him.

At the time of writing, Craig has now been on hunger strike for more than two months, and Mum for almost two months. We still don't know whether our letter asking them to end their hunger strike has reached them. We don't know whether they're receiving the medical care they urgently need. Living with that uncertainty every single day is something I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Amongst all of this, there has been some important progress.

Our legal team's submission to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has now been formally received. That is an important step towards securing international recognition of what we have believed all along, that Mum and Craig's detention is arbitrary and that their fundamental rights have been repeatedly violated.

We also welcomed the appointment of Alistair Burt as the UK's Special Envoy for complex consular cases. We genuinely hope this brings fresh momentum and renewed urgency. We look forward to meeting him and working constructively together because time is something Mum and Craig simply do not have.

They do.
