Khaled Al-Qazzaz is a permanent resident of Canada and is married to Canadian engineer and educator Sarah Attia. Sarah and Khaled have four Canadian children ages 3 to 9.

During the events leading up to the 2011 Egyptian revolution, Khaled was amongst the youth who helped topple the dictatorial Mubarak regime. When the first free presidential elections were announced, Khaled become a volunteer campaigner for the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP). Recognized for his talents, Khaled was asked to work for the government as a civil servant after the FJP won the democratic election in June 2012.

During the military coup, Khaled was detained from his office at the presidency on July 3rd, 2013. He was placed in a military facility for several months followed by detainment in the worst prison in Egypt under solitary confinement in very difficult conditions for 542 days. On October 26, 2014 he was moved to a hospital because of his critical health condition. On December 29, 2014 the Attorney General issued an order for Khaled’s release confirming that his investigation had been closed and that no charges would be proffered. He was released from the hospital detention on January 11, 2015. During his arbitrary detainment Khaled was never charged and was never part of any trials.

In February 2015 Sarah and the children traveled from Toronto to Cairo to be with Khaled given his release, and to help facilitate the paperwork needed for his travel. Since then, Khaled and the family have attempted to travel back to Canada twice, most recently on April 16, 2015, but both times have been prevented without reason.

We, the Canadian public, join our Members of Parliament, Ambassadors and Ministers in urging you to directly contact Egyptian authorities to facilitate the safe travel of the Al-Qazzaz family back to Canada.  The over two-year long ordeal that the family has been subjected to must come to an end.
