Free Food Bar Benefits for Harris Teeter Staff!
The Issue
When I was in college, I had the opportunity to work an hourly job for a then extremely popular cosmetic company named Bonne Bell over a 1987 summer when I stayed with my mother in Ohio. Despite the fact that it was an assembly line position, I felt valued and respected by the company. One of the memorable ways they achieved this was by offering us free lunches. Not only did this gesture create a sense of belonging, but it also contributed to the satisfaction and overall morale of the employees.
I believe Harris Teeter, especially Store # 231 at 1631 Kalorama Rd, in Washington, DC, could greatly benefit from adopting a similar approach. The area around this store does not have many restaurant options within a convenient walking distance for those with 15 or 30 minute breaks. As a result, many employees struggle to find affordable and accessible meal options during their breaks. By providing free meals from their snack bar, Harris Teeter would not only show their appreciation for their hardworking employees but also enhance their well-being and workplace satisfaction. Needless to say, on a daily basis, less food would be thrown away.
The benefits of offering complimentary meals are far-reaching. It promotes a sense of community and teamwork among employees and reduces personal expenditures. Many workers live in different quadrants outside of Northwest and can only eat after a long bus ride home.
Making this change would likely lead to higher employee retention rates and job satisfaction, as workers feel acknowledged and supported by their company.
Let's talk about the larger picture. According to a study by the Harvard Business Review, employees who feel recognized and valued are 2.5x more likely to be productive and content in their roles. The prospect of increasing employee satisfaction without substantial additional costs should be an attractive one for a company the size of Kroger, Harris Teeter's parent company.
I urge Kroger and Harris Teeter's management to consider implementing this thoughtful and impactful benefit. By ensuring employees can enjoy meals conveniently and free of charge, they are not only investing in their present workforce but also in the future growth and positive reputation of their brand.
