Why this petition matters

Started by Gemma Fernandez

Charles Salvador (formerly Bronson) was imprisoned at 19 years old in 1974. He was, by his own admission, an angry young man that fought back at the system. This lead to his seven year sentence being extended. He suffered with poor mental health and unfortunately for Charlie, in those days it just wasn't dealt with correctly. The brutality and cruel treatment he endured caused him to lash out further. He served many years in Broadmoor where he was treated like an animal and injected against his will with the “liquid cosh”. He was kept in solitary for years on end.. he didn't even know if it was day or night.. not allowed books or a pen..just rotting away. Charlie is not very popular at all inside the judicial system. He HAS committed crimes inside, which he holds his hand up to. He fully acknowledges that he deserved 30 years of his sentence, but now he has served his time and (18 years!) more. Where is his justice?

He has had 47 years of cruelty and inhumane treatment yet he still remains positive and upbeat where most would have given up. How many years does he have left? He's lost loved ones, family and friends whilst being in prison and has never been able to attend any funerals. He's 69 years old and a danger to no one!

Charlie has humble wishes, the chance to stroke a dog, swim in the sea, cuddle his loved ones, eat proper fish 'n' chips and drink out of a china cup! All he wants is to live out the rest of his life peacefully, with his loved ones around him, creating art and raising money for charity. He sees it as an opportunity to turn something negative into a positive.

The bottom line is he being managed rather than progressed. He has not been violent for a number of years and has rehabilitated himself, through his love of art and raised well over £250,000 for charities as well as personally supporting plenty of vulnerable people. He's written 19 books and won 12 awards. He spends his day focusing on his fitness and always strives to achieve and to help others. He has a BIG HEART and loves to help and inspire people. The media don't want to show his good side though, do they!?

He remains in CSC, which is deep custody, with no independent oversight. The Ministry of Justice need to progress him. He needs to be progressed not managed. He shouldn’t be in a prison within a prison. Charlie is NOT the monster he has been portrayed to be. He’s a man who's made mistakes and admits that he was wrong. How can murderers and paedophiles serve less time?! Ruining people’s lives forever, to be let out with new identities and shiny new lives? Meanwhile, Charlie remains locked up for 23 hours a day. He's so well behaved now he isn't even handcuffed when they unlock him, he has a kettle in his cell and is on an enhanced regime. He has a good laugh with prison officers on a daily basis. Does this sound like the most dangerous and violent man in Britain to you??

The Ministry of Justice are delaying his parole hearing. He brought a legal challenge arguing if he waived his right to privacy he should be able to apply for a public hearing. The Government resisted but eventually conceded. They now need to change the Parole Board Rules. This has been significantly delayed. Dominic Raab the current Secretary of State for Justice holds a number of roles and appears to be delaying the change.

Charlie wants to appear in front of the independent Parole Board and evidence the change he has made and show he is no longer the violent man his reputation suggests.

So, please, we urge you to sign this petition and share it with as many people as possible. We need to raise awareness and ensure Charlie isn't forgotten about. Every day that passes is taking a day of his life. Let’s get Charlie OUT!!
