SECOND LOOK DENIED OVER 21 DAYS
We have now received confirmation that Byron Greene was deemed ineligible for Maryland’s Second Look review process because the offense occurred 21 days after his 25th birthday.
Twenty-one days separated him from eligibility.
Meanwhile, Byron has now maintained 19 years without disciplinary infractions while incarcerated and has demonstrated sustained rehabilitation, growth, leadership, and mentorship.
This update is not offered to challenge the intent of Second Look legislation. The intent matters.
It is offered because Byron’s case reveals an important question: Can justice acknowledge human development while refusing to examine those who fall just beyond an age threshold?
Byron was excluded not because rehabilitation was absent. He was excluded because the law required a line.
Our petition continues to seek recognition of Byron’s transformation, meaningful review, and consideration through executive action and other available avenues.
We ask supporters to continue standing with us, sharing Byron’s story, and advocating for justice that sees the whole person.
Nineteen years without infractions deserves to be seen. Growth deserves to be seen. Humanity deserves to be seen.
Byron Greene was not denied because rehabilitation was absent.
He was denied because eligibility was absent. I'm sure that he is not the only one impacted by this.
