Petition in Support of Benjamin Greene
To the Administration and Relevant Authorities at Decatur High School:
We, the undersigned, are asking for fair, compassionate, and proportional consideration of Benjamin Greene following the incident that occurred at Decatur High School on September 8, 2026.
Our Main Request
The primary goal of this petition is to ask that Benjamin Greene be allowed to keep his position as a teacher at Decatur High School, if possible. We also ask that the appropriate authorities carefully consider the circumstances of this incident before deciding whether criminal charges are warranted.
If criminal charges are ultimately filed and Mr. Greene is convicted or sentenced to incarceration, we ask that any legally available options for leniency, alternative sentencing, sentence reduction, or early release be considered, taking into account the circumstances of the incident, Mr. Greene’s character, his history as an educator, and the support he has received from the school community.
According to the account of the incident, a freshman student, Jay, first directed a racial slur toward a school janitor. After Mr. Greene confronted and scolded the student about his behavior, Jay allegedly directed the same racial slur toward Mr. Greene.
Mr. Greene subsequently lost his temper and physically tackled the student. Several teachers reportedly had to intervene to separate them.
We recognize that physically attacking a student is a serious matter, and we are not asking anyone to pretend that it did not happen. However, we believe the circumstances leading up to the incident deserve serious consideration. Mr. Greene had just confronted the student’s use of a deeply offensive racial slur toward a member of the school staff, and the student then directed the same slur toward him personally.
The student’s behavior was completely unacceptable. Calling a teacher and a school janitor a racial slur should not be dismissed simply because the student is a freshman. We believe the student’s conduct was a significant factor in the escalation of the situation and should also be addressed appropriately.
At the same time, we believe Mr. Greene’s actions should be considered in the full context of the incident. A moment of anger and poor judgment should not automatically erase the good work he has done or define his entire character as a teacher.
Mr. Greene is viewed by many people in the school community as a good person and a dedicated teacher. We believe he deserves an opportunity to explain what happened and have his character, history, and the circumstances surrounding the incident considered before any final decision is made.
We respectfully ask that:
Mr. Greene be permitted to keep his job, if possible.
The appropriate authorities carefully consider whether criminal prosecution is warranted.
The student’s use of racial slurs toward school staff be taken seriously.
The complete circumstances leading up to the confrontation be considered.
Witness statements and any available evidence be reviewed before final decisions are made.
Mr. Greene’s character and history as a teacher be taken into consideration.
Any consequences be fair and proportionate to the circumstances.
If Mr. Greene is ultimately convicted or sentenced to incarceration, all legally available options for leniency, alternative sentencing, sentence reduction, or early release be considered.
We are not asking for the incident to be ignored or for Mr. Greene to be above accountability. We are asking for fairness, compassion, and consideration of the entire situation.
We believe Mr. Greene should not lose his career or have his entire future determined solely by one serious moment in which he lost his temper after being subjected to severe verbal provocation.
Please consider allowing Benjamin Greene to remain a teacher and, if criminal proceedings occur, consider the most fair and proportionate outcome available under the law, including any lawful alternatives to incarceration or opportunities for sentence reduction or early release.
