The Issue

For almost a decade, I have been working diligently on Front Street in downtown Traverse City. Throughout these years, I have faced the burden of paying exorbitant amounts in parking tickets and meters just to be able to park my car and go to work. This personal experience has led me to create this petition, advocating for free parking without hourly restrictions for downtown employees.

Downtown businesses heavily rely on their employees to keep operations running smoothly. However, it is unjust that these very employees are required to pay just to park their vehicles while fulfilling their work responsibilities. The current parking charges effectively reduce our hourly pay by $1.25 or more, putting an unnecessary financial strain on hardworking individuals.

Traverse City's downtown area thrives due to its vibrant community and diverse range of businesses. However, many downtown employees cannot afford the high cost of living within the city itself and must commute from surrounding areas. As a result, driving becomes a necessity rather than an option for us.

To support our cause effectively, let us present some relevant facts:

1) Economic Impact: According to a study conducted by The National League of Cities (NLC), providing free or subsidized employee parking can significantly boost local economies by attracting more workers into city centers.

2) Employee Retention: A report published by Smart Growth America highlights that offering affordable or free employee parking helps retain skilled workers who might otherwise seek employment elsewhere due to financial burdens associated with commuting expenses.

3) Increased Foot Traffic: Research conducted by the International Downtown Association (IDA) reveals that removing barriers such as paid parking can lead to increased foot traffic in commercial areas, benefiting both businesses and customers alike.

By implementing policies that allow downtown employees like myself access to free and unrestricted parking options during working hours, we can foster a more inclusive environment where everyone has equal opportunities without being financially penalized for simply going to work.

We urge the Traverse City government and relevant authorities to consider this petition seriously, taking into account the significant impact it will have on downtown employees, local businesses, and the overall economic growth of our beloved city. Let us work together towards a fair and supportive environment that values its workforce and ensures their financial well-being.
