Fred the Pig belongs at Chris P's Rescue and Rehabilitation Sanctuary

The Issue

I am deeply moved by the story of Fred, a farm pig who was promised a safe haven at Chris P’s Rescue and Rehabilitation sanctuary by the Aurora Animal Shelter in Colorado. In an unexpected turn of events, instead of being sent to live out his days wallowing in mud and enjoying treats, Fred was handed over to a Future Farmers of America (FFA) group. He is now confined in a small pen, destined for breeding and ultimately slaughter.

This action contradicts the very essence of what an animal shelter should stand for. It is unacceptable that an animal promised safety ends up with such grim prospects. Fred deserves better.

Pigs are intelligent creatures with complex social structures; they are more than just commodities for human use. According to Animal Behaviorist Dr. Marc Bekoff, pigs have cognitive abilities comparable to dogs and primates (Bekoff 2009). They deserve our compassion and respect.

The sanctuary is ready and willing to provide Fred with the life he deserves - one filled with care, freedom, mud baths, treats - not one marked by confinement or eventual slaughter.

We urge Aurora Animal Shelter to honor their initial commitment made towards Fred's well-being by returning him back safely into the hands of Chris P’s Rescue & Rehabilitation sanctuary where he rightfully belongs.
