As you may know, I am a strong advocate against animal cruelty. That is why I introduced S. 2439, the Tracking Animal Cruelty Crimes Bill, which would give law enforcement a critical tool for combating animal cruelty and preventing violent crime by directing the FBI to add animal cruelty crimes to the Uniform Crime Reporting Program. I was also a proud cosponsor of S. 1880, the Dog Fighting Prohibition Act, which would have made all participation in dog-fighting a federal felony and increased the maximum penalty from three to five years in prison. Additionally, I cosponsored S. 261, the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act of 2007, which amends the federal criminal code to make it unlawful to knowingly sponsor or exhibit an animal in an animal fighting venture if the animal was moved through interstate or foreign commerce. You will be pleased to know that this legislation passed the Congress and was signed into law by the President on May 5th, 2007.
