The Issue

The mental health services in Sligo seem to be lacking in resources of services and possibly person centreness based in some areas. You could also question a continuity of care in some areas.

What is person-centre ?

“…care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient
preferences, needs and values, ensuring that patient values guide all
clinical decisions”

•To  Involve users of health and social services as equal partners in planning, developing and monitoring care. This means talking with the individual rather than about them. The focus is put on the abilities and skills of the individual rather than the labels, statistics and diagnosis.•

*To consider the person’s point of view and being respectful.

• To consider people’s desires, values, family situations and social
circumstances. The procedures are put into place to support the individual rather than for the benefit of the service so I would take this as not just handing out medication but using other resources that are available.

So how can we improve mental health. This will require policies and programmes in government and business sectors which  includes education, work, justice, transport, environment and housing.

Emotional and mental health is so important because it’s such a vital part of your life as it can impact your thoughts, behaviors and emotions. So being healthy emotionally can promote productivity and effectiveness in activities like work, school or caregiving. It also plays an important part in the health of your relationships, and allows you to adapt to changes in your life and cope with adversity.
