Francis Crick Assaulted and Diminished Women: Change the Name of Crick Institute @thecrick

The Issue

Earlier this month, Picture a Scientist debuted and National Academy Award winning scientist Dr Nancy Hopkins once again shared her story of meeting Francis Crick. He came up to her and grabbed her breasts. She has shared this story publicly for more than a decade.

We know Crick came from a generation where women were actively targeted and preyed upon by too many men. We know even now most women are subject to sexual misconduct. It was almost certainly much worse during Crick's time and because of Crick.

Much of Crick's behavior was known in 2011 when the institute was named in his honor. There is nothing funny or charming about these cringe-worthy stories. There is no part of this history we should be celebrating, other than that some women persisted and science progressed.

When the Francis Crick Institute in London was named, his history was well known as an abusive, creepy scientists who shamelessly participating in stealing data from Rosalyn Franklin to grab the glory of 'discovering' the structure of DNA.

There are no heroes in science. There are humans who have hardworking, insightful, creative moments. More of these moments happen when we are all safe.  The glory belongs to the science, not the humans. We are flawed and pale in comparison to the discoveries we make.

Rename the institute the Genetics Institutes of London.

Take down your pictures of flawed humans. Put up lovely images of the molecules we study, the pathways we identify and vision of what science look like when all minds can achieve their potential.
