On July 31st, senior judges decided that Anthony Lyons got an "unduly lenient" sentence and put the sex attacker back in jail, sending out a powerful statement. But for future victims, our laws must be changed. Now, the Government must put an end to soft sentencing and create consistency in the courts. We want new laws to send out the message that serious crime will be punished - first offence or not. For violent sexual assault, we propose a mandatory minimum 8-year prison sentence and a mandatory maximum of 12 years. For convicted murderers, give judges the power to recommend a minimum jail term in each case - now.
