The Issue

The Rainbow School board has recently announced that they will be closing Larchwood P.S in Dowling, Chelmsford V.D.C.S, Chelmsford P.S, and the French Immersion Program at Levack P.S.  In return, they will 'upgrade' the old Chelmsford V.D.C.S (high school), and consolidate all of these elementary students into one 'dual-school'.  Since they closed Levack High School almost 20 years ago, students from Cartier, Levack, Onaping and Dowling have been forced to travel to Chelmsford or Sudbury for their education and now, they will be put on a bus for 2 1/2 - 3 hours a day to travel to and from the Valley.  There should be no doubt that once Larchwood P.S is removed, the Rainbow School will continue to set their sights on the closure of Levack P.S - essentially making the closest community to access education - Chelmsford.  Onaping Falls (Levack, Onaping, and Dowling) continue to fight for every available resource.  We hold bake sales to keep our Arena open, and watch our mining resources  heading out of town on a daily basis.  We are tired of fighting for schools, recreational facilities, and basic resources that make living in a small town enjoyable.  We are not second class citizens - and would suggest that since it appears that traveling from Levack to Sudbury is such a good idea for our students, that the tables be turned, and they close one of the many, many schools in the Sudbury area and bus them to Levack,  Dowling, or Chelmsford instead.
