The Issue

Hello neighbors! Fountain Avenue is a vital corridor for residents, visitors, cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers, yet it remains one of the most dangerous streets in our community. It is time to implement “Complete Streets” improvements along Fountain Avenue in West Hollywood, CA to enhance safety, accessibility, transportation equity and quality of life for all users.

Fountain Avenue has a clear pattern of injuries and deaths due to unsafe roadway design. The list of victims is too long— and continues to grow. On July 10th, 2025 a bicyclist was killed by a driver in a hit-and-run on Fountain Ave.  The City of West Hollywood is hosting a community meeting on August 19, 2025 (6PM @ Plummer Park) to update the community about plans to make Fountain safer for everyone— please show up to make your voice heard! The city has known about the danger posed by the street’s current design for several years but nothing has changed. We must push to fix this deadly street as soon as possible and before any more of our neighbors are hurt.

Years ago, LA County shaved Fountain’s sidewalks, resulting in a dangerous and inconsistent design for the street and now too many lives have been lost. The current Fountain Avenue design has created exceptionally dangerous conditions for everyone that lives near it and uses it to travel. Over 80% of the sidewalks are too narrow, falling below ADA standards, the wide lanes encourage drivers to speed on our neighborhood street, and it is one of the four streets in our city’s High Injury Network.

Our community shouldn’t have to fear for our lives when navigating a local street. The Complete Street design improvements that are available to us will create a safer, more vibrant, and inclusive Fountain Avenue that serves all residents, families, and visitors, regardless of how they travel. It’s time to prioritize safety for everyone by widening the sidewalks to make them ADA-compliant, bring back some street beautification and install protected lanes for those who bike, skateboard or scooter.  Now is our opportunity to improve this street and prioritize safety for all of us!

I walk and bike down Fountain Avenue everyday to get a coffee, walk my dogs, and bike to the gym. Every time I am within inches of high speed vehicles nearly brushing my elbow. We don't have to live like this! In a city that prides itself on equity and inclusion, it is crucial that we improve our streets for all who are part of our community. Don’t erase my voice and please don’t erase your neighbors!

Our hearts and prayers go out to all of those that have lost friends and family members in the tragic crashes caused by the current dangerous street design. We are not anti-car by any means, but do think everyone that uses the road deserves a safe space. Healthy sidewalk and transportation culture is the future. We can all choose a better future for Fountain Avenue now!

Let’s raise our voices together! Please join us in signing this petition in favor of Complete Streets improvements on Fountain Avenue.
