The Issue

This is for my Sophomore civics class. We are creating presentations and working to fix local, state, and even national issues. I am working on reducing the pollution in our Great Lakes. One main part of the pollution is the trash and plastic pollution.

Senate Bill 504 is supposed to initiate January 1st, 2027. This bill is to establish and administer a microplastics program for baseline conditions in public water supplies.  The goal is that by July 1st, 2031 they will have gathered enough information to submit a report and get recommendations for the next steps. They will create a toxic limit for microplastics and change our fresh water forever. This will help our Great Lakes, which provides about 21% of the world's freshwater, become less polluted and better for everyone.

Senate Bill 505 would obligate the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to come up with a plan to investigate and keep an eye on microplastics all around the state. The goal is to mandate the amount of microplastics in the lakes and set a standard for safety.

Signing this petition gains the support to hopefully accelerate these bills and get our Great Lakes in a much better position sooner rather than later. Any donations will be put towards the program as funds for evaluating and gathering the data needed.
