Each lunch period is about 40 minutes long and will now be separated into two halves, with some students eating in the cafeteria while others wait inside of the auditorium. This allows about 20 minutes or so for students to eat lunch. However, this does not account for the time it will take for the students to switch locations and for the students to buy their lunch on the lunch lines, which will now probably be substantially longer because the entire student population is being kept inside the building. Taking into account the time it takes for these things to happen, we are not sure whether the students will have enough time in the period to eat lunch.
We are also concerned with the fact that people switching locations every 20 minutes for 4 periods of the day will become a disruption for students who are in class.
The previous system of the open campus policy is a better alternative. There are several reasons for this. (1) It provides a solution for overcrowding in the cafeteria, which will now have to be compensated for through a less time-efficient lunch policy. (2) Under the previous policy, allowing certain students to leave the building for lunch was considered a privilege for upperclassmen. (3) It provided underclassmen with an incentive to behave (so that they would be able to retain this privilege when they became upperclassmen).
