Community Choice: East Forsyth High School Mascot and School Colors

The Issue

The community of Northeast Forsyth County has long awaited the construction of East Forsyth High School.  What was originally slated to open in August of 2012 is only just now in the beginning stages of construction, with the official groundbreaking held on Tuesday, May 21, 2019.  Out of that groundbreaking came the news that the school mascot and colors had already been chosen in 2008 by the principals of the high schools open at that time (North, West, South, and Forsyth Central).  According to a local elected official, those principals agreed to name the new mascot and colors after a nearby park (Bennett Park) and it's now defunct mascot, the Bronco.  There are so many things that are problematic with that decision, but the most significant issue is that the community that East Forsyth High School will serve was left wholly out of the decision.  When West Forsyth was still in its planning stages, the community was given access to online surveys to weigh in on the mascot, the school colors; even the fight song.  The same held true for Lambert High School, which opened in 2009, just 2 short years after West opened.  East Forsyth High School and the community that it serves deserves to participate in the decisions that are being made that directly impact the school's culture and what better way to do that than to participate in naming the school's mascot and school colors.  Forsyth County Schools, reconsider this decision that was made without the input of the school's stakeholders, stakeholders that you claim you value and include.  Give our community the same level of participation that you gave West Forsyth and Lambert.  We've been waiting a long time for East Forsyth and we deserve to have the same level of involvement.
