Change Forrest High to Chapel Hill High to make the school all inclusive
The Issue
Growing up, I always went to schools that were named after the town or a historic president. So when we moved to a little town called Chapel Hill in Tennessee, I was shocked to find that my new school was not named for a founding father or a town center, but rather for the leader of one of the most notorious racist organizations in existence. The school was, and still is, named Forrest High, after the first grand wizard of the KKK, Nathan Bedford Forrest. As soon as I found out, I hated the name of my school. And, to this day, I hate that that man is still the school’s namesake. When asked where I graduated from, I’m ashamed to have to explain how the school I graduated from is named after the leader of the KKK, of how his paintings hung in the hallways and how there was no diversity. There’s so much wrong with this legacy. It is high time that we change the name of this school to something that doesn’t promote racism. It is time for the paintings of this racist man to be taken down. Schools are supposed to be a place that make children feel safe. By continuing with the name of Forrest High the school is essential promoting racist ideology. I made this petition in the hopes that the school change will change its name to Chapel Hill High. Please sign this petition, and help us eradicate racism one small town at a time.
