Allied Health Professionals Seek Formation of Regulatory Council for the promotion of health services In Pakistan
Allied Health Professionals are health care professionals that work in health care teams to make the health care system function by providing a range of diagnostic, technical, therapeutic, and direct patient care and support services.
Allied Health Professionals are involved with the delivery of health services related to the identification, evaluation, and prevention of diseases. They also provide nutritional and rehabilitation services.
Professions of AHP:
Allied health Professionals includes; Medical Laboratory Technologists, Medical Technologists, Operation Theater technologists, Radiography and Imaging Technologists, Emergency Medical Technologists, Dental Hygienists, Audiologists, Anesthesia Technologists, Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Perfusionists, Radiographers, Respiratory Therapists, Speech-language pathologists, and many others.
Allied Health Professionals and Paramedics:
In Pakistan, there are two categories in the health care system:
Many People in Pakistan used the term Allied Health Professionals for Paramedics (technicians) but it is not a fact.
In reality, Paramedics are those who get two years Diploma (not equal to Intermediate) after their matriculation examination. These diplomas of certain fields are issued by Punjab Medical Faculty.
While Allied Health Professionals (technologists) are those who get degrees after passing FSc Pre-Medical. These degrees (equal to Masters) are issued by certain medical colleges and HEC recognized universities across the country. Even M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs are offered in Allied Health sciences. Every year, thousands of graduates are passing from different universities and medical colleges
Merit System for Allied Health Sciences degree programs:
Same like MBBS and BDS, there is a strict merit system in order to get admission in Allied Health Professionals degree programs. The scheme of studies of these programs are up to date and meet the criteria of International standards.
Why Doctors oppose the formation of AHPs Council:
Allied Health Professional degree programs are introduced in Pakistan to minimize the burdens of doctors. In Pakistan, It is to be thought that the MBBS doctors receiving commissions from almost every field of Health system. They are receiving a big commission from Laboratories, X-Ray centers, etc. They have a fear of losing their commission. That’s why they are not accepting AHPs by a big heart.
We want Pakistan Allied Health Professional Council:
Council is a regulatory body that purpose is to regularize the AHPs and issue a license to work independently
Almost in every country, there is a regulatory body that recognizes Allied Health Professionals and issues a license to practice and utilize their skills according to their job description to benefits people.
Even our neighboring countries including China and India also have a council that regulates Allied Health Professionals.
But in Pakistan, there is no regulatory body for AHPs that’s why health care commission Pakistan declared us “Quack” and it can’t allow us to work independently within our professional scope.
Thousands of graduates are jobless due to the non-availability of any vacancy in Hospitals. The government also not taking any notice of it. That’s why thousands of AHPs are jobless.
Moreover, due to the absence of a regulatory body or license issuing authority, AHPs facing difficulties while working in foreign countries.
In May. 2018, Ex-Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi approved the act of Allied Health Professional council but they didn’t introduce this in the parliament due to elections.
Recently, in September 2019. Prime Minister Imran Khan approved the act again. But due to severe opposition from the Doctors community, no further work has done it.
Without the regulatory, AHPs have no future. Even AHPs can’t work in the country also can’t work in Foreign countries.
We urged the Government of Pakistan not to play with the future of young graduates and take it seriously and resolve the issue in the meantime.
