Declare Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary as Tiger Reserve

The Issue

Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Bhandara and Gondia districts of Eastern Maharashtra. Rich with rare and exotic flora and fauna, Nagzira is famous for wasy Tiger sightings, particularly the legendary A-mark Tigress.

The 158 sq.km. Nagzira WLS saw its expansion in 2010 when New Nagzira WLS, Navegaon National Park, New Navegaon WLS were attached to it. The recently formed Koka Wild Life Sanctuary in Bhandara district has also been annexed to Nagzira making it more than 650 sq. km. of green cover.

The proposal to declare Nagzira as Tiger Reserve was sent in 2010 but the Maharashtra State Forest Ministry has not fulfilled the demand yet, sighting various reasons. Whatever the reasons may be, Nagzira and its landscape needs an urgent attention. Declaring Nagzira as a Tiger Reserve will be most beneficial to Tigers, Leopards, Wild Dogs and other species in the region.
