Relocate the Forest Lawn Cancer Council Fundraiser to Another Location
The issue
Forest Lawn Memorial Park Leppinton in support of the Cancer Council NSW are hosting a fun run, activities and memorial service as a fundraiser on the 28th August 2016 within the grounds of the Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Last years activities included not only the fun run, clowns, much frivolity, petting animals and what looked like the day of the dead/ living dead facepainting. I believe jumping castles are also planned this year. Raising funds for cancer is in no doubt a great cause. A member of my family too raised money for this very in honour of my late mother in law that recently passed from cancer. He ran a half marathon and raised a great deal of money.
Sadly this event at Forest Lawn is upsetting many people. This has been evidenced by reactions in various arenas ... people that have trusted their loved ones to the care of this facility. I have family members that are absolutely devastated. I also recently buried my late sister .... a much loved mother of 6 at Forest Lawn. Whilst some may see this as a means of honouring or celebrating the dead and raising funds for a good cause .... that cannot be argued .... but so many believe that a cemetery, a place of mourning and eternal rest is not seen as the place to be doing it. This event could be run in other locations in the local area ...and still be as ... if not more successful. Realistically how many people are staying away from the event due to the location? People in our community have different beliefs and values and a good portion of them are not being respected. That goes for people that have placed their families members at Forest Lawn.
A key Forest Lawn value statement on their website reads "We are a sanctuary where family and friends can come to reflect, honour and pay tribute to their loved ones in a tranquil, calming environment. We are a place where peace and privacy are cherished and will always be respected." I'm not sure a fun run, clowns and living dead facepainting and the various activities planned align with this statement. 'Always' is a very definitive statement. One of my family members emailed Forest Lawn to voice their concerns to be pretty much disregarded and to be told the event raised a lot of funds last year.... and by the way that participants will be steered away from the memorial sites. I'm not entirely sure that that would make the families feeling disrespected feel any better about this situation.
Its up to you and and your personal beliefs as to what you think. Our belief is that this event should not be held at the memorial park location. The event in itself is a very worthy cause. If you agree please sign this petition to recommend that this event be hosted in another location.
