The Issue

On September 28, 2026, two children were struck by a vehicle while crossing near 70th Avenue and Metropolitan Avenue in Forest Hills. Video reviewed shows the driver running a red light while the children crossed with the Walk signal. One child reportedly suffered a fractured skull. Yet the reported enforcement action was a summons for failure to yield to pedestrians.

How can we protect pedestrians if serious incidents do not lead to meaningful accountability and the street itself remains unsafe?

This is not an isolated concern. According to NYC Crash Mapper, this was the second pedestrian collision recorded at this intersection between January 2021 and June 2026.  A pedestrian was also fatally struck here in 2018.

Our children and neighbors deserve to cross safely. We are calling for action before another family experiences a tragedy.

We ask city officials to:

  1. Conduct an urgent, on-site safety review of the intersection, including traffic signals, crossing times, visibility, and turning movements.
  2. Implement practical safety improvements based on the findings, such as clearer signals, improved sightlines, and traffic-calming measures.
  3. Address unsafe driving and obstructed crossings through appropriate enforcement and parking management.
  4. Provide a community meeting, written response, and clear timeline for next steps.

We are parents and neighbors organizing as Safer Streets for Forest Hills. We want more than promises—we want a transparent process and meaningful action to protect everyone who walks here.

Why this matters
Forest Hills is home to children walking to school, families crossing busy streets, older residents, and people of all ages who deserve to travel safely through their neighborhood.

By signing this petition, you are asking NYC DOT and our local representatives to work with the community toward safer streets and accountable, measurable action.

Please sign and share. Let’s make Forest Hills safer for everyone.
