Meihong Wang, a 62-year-old retired senior engineer and Mother of 33-year-old Minghui Yu, a UK resident of ten years, was abducted by police from Haxi Police office in Nangang District, Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, China on 23rd November 2020. Mrs Wang was abducted because of her peaceful belief Falun Gong, a spiritual Buddhist Qigong practice central on the values of truthfulness, compassion and forbearance, that has been persecuted by Chinese Communist Party’s regime for 21 years.

Mrs Wang is now being held in a criminal detention centre named Harbin Second Detention Centre after 15 days of administrative detention. During her first half a month detention she has been sent to the Harbin City Police Hospital, but the police refused to tell her daughter why she was sent to the hospital.

This is a very critical period of time for action, as Mrs Wang is at high risk of torture, ill-treatment and extended periods of illegal detention. In October 2003, Mrs Wang was caught by police from Xinhua Police Station in Mudanjiang City, where the authorities beat and tortured her in an attempt to get information about other Falun Gong practitioners. They tied her on an iron chair and subjected her to sleep deprivation. A physician checked her when she was taken into custody and reported that she was injured in several places. After the detention, Mrs Wang was sentenced to prison for 11 years, from 2003 to 2014.

Her family, like tens of thousands of other families, was split up during the initial crackdown of Falun Gong. Both Mrs Wang and her husband were sentenced to many years in prison and tortured in an attempt to transform their belief. When her husband was released in 2016, after 15 years of unlawful imprisonment, the family were finally reunited. Only now to be separated once again.

Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is "a spiritual practice that millions around the world have made a part of their lives. Rooted in Buddhist tradition, it consists of two main components: self-improvement through the study of teachings, and gentle exercises and meditation."(https://en.falundafa.org)

The Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) relentless 21-year campaign to eradicate Falun Gong and destroy the lives of Falun Gong practitioners in China continues unabated. Even during this year's pandemic, the CCP has arrested more than 2,000 Falun Gong practitioners and in the first half of 2020 sentenced 139 to prison for their faith, according to Minghui.org.

Even more concerning is that forced organ harvesting of prisoners of conscience still continues in China, according to the China Tribunal Judgment in March this year. The Tribunal concluded that: "Forced organ harvesting has been committed for years throughout China on a significant scale and that Falun Gong practitioners have been one – and probably the main – source of organ supply." The Epoch Times reported: "Since late February, China has performed at least six double-lung transplants on COVID-19 patients, at least two of which took place in Wuhan, where the ongoing virus pandemic first emerged and a hotspot of China’s transplant industry. Chinese hospitals gave little information about how the organs were sourced."

Every day that Mrs Wang is held in detention is a danger to her life.

We are asking the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to do everything in their power to secure her safe release, and to call for the end of the persecution of Falun Gong in China. We all have a duty to defend human dignity, freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the rule of law, whenever and wherever these values come under assault.
