For the past five years, I have dedicated myself to rescuing stray animals in Santorini year-round. During this time, I have witnessed countless acts of cruelty and neglect, from yearly poisonings to animals suffering from treatable diseases due to lack of care. It's time for all of us who care about animal rights to stand up and demand that these innocent creatures receive the protection and care they deserve.

Each year, the stray cats of Santorini face horrific conditions. Without a safe shelter, they are left to wander, exposed to the elements, and vulnerable to diseases and poisonings. Many suffer needlessly, lacking access to basic veterinary care and medicines that could alleviate their pain and suffering. Very few get the help they deserve. As compassionate human beings, it is our responsibility to ensure that these animals are treated with kindness and humanity.

There's lone volunteers. There's a dog shelter (who recently rescued a flamingo). What's lacking is a SYSTEMATIC approach to preventing cruelty, reducing their population and misery and reducing the burden on us lone volunteers. 

We expect the help to come from the tourists and foreigners before our own municipality takes action!

We are calling on the mayor of Santorini to take immediate action. We propose the construction of a safe and secure shelter to house stray animals, providing them with food, water, and medical care. This shelter would not only rescue animals from the streets but also serve as a center for education and community engagement, promoting responsible pet ownership and humane treatment of all animals.

Additionally, we urge the implementation of strict regulations and penalties against those who harm or poison stray animals. NOT JUST WORDS! ENFORCE IT! INSTALL CCTV IN CRITICAL DANGER ZONES!

STOP PROTECTING ANIMAL ABUSERS AND MURDERERS!

For years, my sister and I got bullied for doing what's right - and she was finally run over by a car, belonging to the very farmer hunting and trapping birds and killing animals that she'd tried to stop!

These acts of cruelty must not be tolerated, and the perpetrators must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. By creating an environment where cruelty is condemned and compassion is rewarded, we can transform Santorini into a true sanctuary for strays.
