COS Land Swap
Mar 27, 2018
Here are the comments I am making before the City Council today:
Good afternoon,
I attended a town hall meeting last week on the proposed changes to streets in Old North End. How many sources of undue influence were unleashed upon us? Does the City employ such techniques in all of your public comment processes? You may not conspire to change the character of our neighborhood that way.
Does the City's planned summit house really qualify for some variance that will allow over a thousand people to be crammed into 15,000 square feet? I was told that the summit house would hold 450 people comfortably, what do you call over a thousand? Has the public comment process for the summit house been tainted by incorrect information?
Why did Mr. Anschutz close the Cog Railway? I am told that the Cog Railway could run all summer with no problems at all. The tracks are in better shape now than they have been for years. Is Mr. Anschutz doing further harm to the Historic District in Manitou Springs, and trying to prevent the closure of the Manitou Incline?
My sources tell me that the City Attorney's Office has re-evaluated the land swap and the Incline, and have determined that both have to go. We do not expect them to make a public statement because their job is to advise the Mayor and members of Council.
Why is the Mayor refusing to inform the public?
Throughout the public comment process Mayor Suthers never stopped saying that the land swap was good for the community. I am told that he spends a lot of time over at the Broadmoor with Mr. Anschutz and the Governor. I am certain that he knew that the land swap would harm the City of Manitou Springs, and he shoved it down our throats anyway. What do the members of this Council know about this? Do you have enough evidence of misconduct to remove the Mayor?
I am not at liberty to discuss here the worst problems with the Manitou Incline, suffice it to say that people in Washington want it closed. John Suthers used to work to restrain that monster while he was the States Attorney, now he is personally responsible for the harm that it does.
I would be happy to work things out in exchange for cooperation, but the Mayor is now obstructing our efforts to rid ourselves of both the Incline and the land swap. I urge this Council to bring more pressure on our Mayor to comply with the law, and honor the rights of the citizens of our City. If he continues as he is today, his current misconduct more than justifies his being removed him office.
