The Issue

In our community's heart in Mays Place, Bourne , there is a small park that sadly stands as a symbol of neglect and missed potential. As a resident of this estate, I witness daily the frustration and disappointment in our children’s eyes due to the crumbling equipment and unsafe conditions of their play area.

Our local children's park, governed by the housing association Amplius, is in dire need of a makeover. There are no swings, no slides, no goal posts or anything for children to enjoy themselves with apart from a few wooden, non moving sculptures .

Research supports the imperative nature of play in childhood development. According to a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, "Play is not frivolous; it enhances brain structure and function and promotes executive function." In our tightly-knit community, where many families might not be able to afford private entertainment options, public playgrounds are not just needed—they are essential.

A safe, well-equipped park encourages physical activity, helping combat obesity and sedentary lifestyles, issues which have been growing concerns in the UK. Moreover, public spaces designed for play help forge community bonds, reduce social isolation, and foster a thriving neighbourhood spirit.

We don't ask for much. Other communities, such as Market deeping, see their kids enjoying modern parks with climbing frames, safe surfaces, and interactive play equipment that fuels the imagination. Why should our children have any less?

We propose that Amplius conducts an immediate assessment of the current park facilities, addresses all safety concerns, and installs new, robust, and engaging equipment. This should include swings, slides, climbing structures, and perhaps even sensory installations that support children with different needs.

Sign this petition to urge Amplius to invest in our community's future. Our children deserve a chance to play safely and freely. With your support, we can build a vibrant space that nurtures the growth and happiness of the youngest among us. Please sign and help us make this vision for a better park a reality.
