COVID & Tuition Fees : A Plea for Compassion

COVID & Tuition Fees : A Plea for Compassion
The Issue
The Ateneo High School and Grade School recently published its fees for the SY 2020-2021. For this coming school year, Ateneo has implemented distance learning — which means that students will not actually go to the school due to the COVID pandemic. However, based on the amounts, the fees this year are almost the same as last year when the kids were going to school. The fees are unreasonable for the following reasons:
1. There are items there (like athletics fee, library fee) which are unclear. The kids will not be going to school and hopefully the parents won’t also.
2. The school is asking the parents to pay for development fees and special technology programs — which we think are the costs for setting up the distance learning program.
3. The school is doing distance learning for the first time and our kids will be undergoing an experimental program— and parents are paying for these costs.
4. The fees were published without prior consultations and with no explanation.
5. The fees were published just a week before the scheduled enrollment unlike other schools where the parents were given ample time to have a meaningful dialogue with the management.
