On 16 October 2026, our beautiful niece, Maddy — lost her life at just 18 years old after her vehicle entered the water beside Chapel Street in Tauranga.

Maddy had only recently moved to Tauranga to start building her future. She was at the beginning of her adult life, with so much still ahead of her.

As an aunt, I am turning our grief into a call for action.

I am asking Tauranga City Council to urgently investigate the safety risks along the waterside at Chapel Street, examine previous crashes and incidents, and take meaningful steps to prevent another vehicle from entering the water.

We are calling for an effective vehicle-safety barrier and interim safety measures while a permanent solution is progressed.

This is not about blame or speculation. It is about asking the difficult questions, examining the risks and doing what can reasonably be done to protect lives.

I hope to build this campaign with the support of our community for her family

We cannot bring Maddy back. But we can ask for changes that may help prevent another family from experiencing this devastating loss.
