The Better Chicken Option (TBCO) Petition
The Better Chicken Option (TBCO) Petition
The Issue
More and more Filipinos are taking steps to refuse animal abuse in their supply chains, and we want Chicken Producers to do the same!
It is time for Chicken Producers to adopt The Better Chicken Option, or TBCO.
TBCO is a list of seven (7) guidelines that seek to address the unspeakable cruelty chickens face in farms and other food production facilities. These seven guidelines call for improvements of the space allocation, flooring, lighting conditions, enrichment, and stocking density. They also address direct improvements to the health of broiler chickens by asking for longer rest hours and slower growth rates.
1. SPACE
PROPOSED STANDARDS - No Cages
CURRENT STANDARDS - Both CCS and Traditional Housing do not involve cages
2. REST HOURS
PROPOSED STANDARDS - 6 hours constant darkness minimum per 24 hours
CURRENT STANDARDS – For CCS five hours of constant darkness; For Traditional natural lighting period
3. LIGHT
PROPOSED STANDARDS – Minimum of 50 lux light period
CURRENT STANDARDS – ranging from 20 to 40 lux
4. STOCK RATE
PROPOSED STANDARDS – maximum density of 30kg live birth per square meter
CURRENT STANDARDS – 20-28kg live bird per square meter due to humidity
5. GROWTH RATE
PROPOSED STANDARDS – slower growth breed; average growth rate of 50 grams/day max
CURRENT STANDARDS – 58-60grams per day
6. LITTER FLOORING
PROPOSED STANDARDS – 100% deep litter flooring (5mm deep)
CURRENT STANDARDS – no litter in CSS, plastic flooring is raised to 3mm
7. ENRICHMENT
PROPOSED STANDARDS – 2 meters of perches per 2000 birds and 2 pieces of pecking materials per 2000 birds
CURRENT STANDARDS – no perches
By signing this petition, you are calling out Chicken Producers to improve the condition of animals in the food industry, beginning with broiler chickens.
Providing litter to allow chickens to dust bathe, providing perches so that chickens can perch have no immediate impact on the quality of meat but chickens will be happier and will have a better quality of life.
Committing to change to slower-growing breeds in 5 years will show that producers are open to making improvements for animal welfare even if it will add costs to production.
By letting chicken producers know that these things matter to you, you can help us convince them that what is better for the chickens is better for their businesses as well.
Compassionate and forward-thinking producers, contract growers, supermarkets, groceries, fast food and restos choose The Better Chicken Option because consumers choose TBCO, too.
Help us get in touch with more food chains or companies by commenting below who you think would be open to The Better Chicken Option. You may also directly email us the contact information of specific corporate officers at betterchicken@paws.org.ph
