Buy Fairtrade cacao

Is cacao really a super food? Or super flawed?

We love everything about cacao from its rich decadent flavour to its versatile indulgence, so much so that we are known to eat approximately 6-7 kg of chocolate made from cacao a year (Statista, 2016). Cacao is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans, this way no nutritional value is lost through overheating, creating a remarkable super food. This super food contains ample amounts of antioxidants, iron, calcium and magnesium, although what many do not know is that cacao contains a hidden ingredient that is arrogantly taken advantage of, slave labour.

There is nothing sweet about slave labour, 70% of the world’s cacao supply is produced in Ghana and the Ivory Coast to companies like; Hershey’s, Mars and Nestle who benefit from this cheap labour immensely. Their products are sold in Australian supermarkets for naive customers to purchase (foodispower, 2016). Currently, journalists and organizations like ‘Fairtrade International’ are working together to expose cacao slave labour (Nations, 2016). You can help by buying Fairtrade cacao powder from brands like Cadbury, Natures Way, Lovingearth, San Churro and Green and Blacks in order to stop slave labour, human trafficking and child labour for good. Please sign this petition in order to spread the word and hopefully prevent individuals from buying non-fairtrade products.
