Health warnings on processed meat.

The Issue

The World Health Organisation lists processed meat such as sausages, ham and bacon as a number one carcinogen alongside tobacco, asbestos and alcohol, which means they will cause cancer. The WHO also lists red meat such as beef, pork and lamb as a number two carcinogen- which means they will probably cause cancer.

A lot of consumers are unaware that they are feeding themselves and their families, including young children, food products which carry a profound cancer risk. As the tobacco industry now holds a responsibility to apply warnings, processed meats and red meats also need to carry warnings on their packaging- clearly visible at point of purchase. This will ensure that the public are making an informed choice and not putting themselves or their loved ones at risk of disease due to lack of awareness.
