Apr 2, 2017 — DISCLAIMER: The following update is meant to inform supporters of this petition about events in Venezuela that impact the life of Ruperta, the elephant at the Caricuao Zoo. I encourage supporters to do their own research and use their own critical thinking. Let's help Ruperta and Venezuela. In a video posted Sunday, April 2nd, 2017, by the Venezuelan news website Maduradas.com, President Nicolás Maduro states that the story of Ruperta, the elephant reported as severely undernourished at the Caricuao Zoo by several news organizations (Univision, Miami Herald, etc.), is "a novel, a show to demoralize the people". The website Maduradas.com states that President Nicolás Maduro believes the story about Ruperta's health is "psychological warfare" orchestrated by the "venezuelan right". President Maduro stated in a video posted that Ruperta's state is due to the elephant's "old age". The president's statements contradict an interview on CNNEspañol.com that show an Inparques worker saying Ruperta, who is in her 30s, is malnourished and suffers from anemia, and that other animals at the zoo have died or are hidden by the authorities because of their poor state. Opposition leader Henrique Capriles, governor of the Venezuelan state of Miranda, has stated that over 80% of Venezuela's population lives in poverty. All of this occurs as Venezuela is in the middle of renewed political tensions due to a controversy over the country's system of political checks and balances. This is a crisis that many Latin American leaders consider a threat to democracy in Venezuela.
