Keep our community zoned as residential. Stop the warehouses.
The Issue
The time to act is NOW. Sign the petition AGAINST the rezoning of neighboring residential land for yet another warehouse. This warehouse will bring increased truck traffic to an already crowded Sierra Avenue. It will have a significant and unavoidable impact on air quality shared by neighboring communities and increase greenhouse gases. Additionally, an Environmental Impact Report determined that this Project will have a significant effect on the environment, all while being surrounded by residential communities.
Up for vote at the next Fontana City Council meeting is the proposed Sierra Avenue and Casa Grande Avenue Warehouse Project. The proposed Project, if approved, will rezone approximately 15.21 acres of Residential land to Light Industrial land in order to make way for a 322,996 square foot warehouse.
There are currently 3 additional industrial buildings within a mile of the proposed Project, all of which utilize Sierra Avenue for truck traffic. Under construction today is a 4th industrial building less than 300 feet to the south of this proposed Project. At the proposed site, Sierra Avenue consists of only one northbound and one southbound lane with no safety devices to separate or manage traffic. Sierra Avenue is incapable of handling the current traffic load. The current traffic deficiencies will be compounded with the completion of the industrial center currently under construction and further compounded with the approval of the proposed Project.
On October 20th, the Fontana Planning Commission voted to recommend that the Fontana City Council approve the project, despite concerns from the public and the majority of the Commissioners themselves. The recording of the meeting can be viewed at https://fontanaca.swagit.com/play/10212020-953/16/ The City of Fontana had previously agreed in its warehouse overlay plan, that warehouses would only be built south of Casa Grande Avenue to ensure that these industrial sites do not intrude into the residential communities of Fontana and Rialto where they clearly do not belong (38m:38s https://fontanaca.swagit.com/play/10212020-953/16/ The proposed Project would have Residential properties to the north, east, and west. The proposed site, north of Casa Grande, is zoned Residential and is surrounded by communities of people and not other industrial buildings.
This Project has no place in what is clearly a growing residential community. This was evident even to the Fontana Planning Commission who all expressed concerns of this Project’s impact to the community. The Commission voiced traffic and safety concerns with Sierra not being able to handle the increased traffic (16m:10s https://fontanaca.swagit.com/play/10212020-953/16/ The Commission also acknowledged that this Project “should have been a lot nicer being surrounded by homes in the newest community in Fontana right now, that a lot of people are investing their money in” (Commissioner Sanchez 21m:58s https://fontanaca.swagit.com/play/10212020-953/16/
